Things you didn't know about cottages
- Originally in the Middle Ages cottages were used to house agricultural workers and their families.
- The phrase cottage denoted the dwelling of a cotter so cottages were smaller peasant housing units with larger houses called messuages.
- In those days when a cottage was referred to they meant a complete farm house including a small yard, not just a standalone dwelling.
- So the Latin word cotagium meant a farm with a barn, a fenced yard and a piece of land with a gate.
